Solstice Kitchen Wine Bar

Nearly twenty minutes from the heart of Five Points you'll find a growing metropolis known as Northeast. Solstice Kitchen and Wine Bar is just one of a slew of new establishments to pop up in the area. From the owners of Mr. Friendly's and Gervais and Vine comes Solstice, described vaguely as "new American" cuisine. I guess the characterization comes from the creators of modern American and noveaux American, but to me the labels mean little and have zero effect on my enjoyment of the end product. But I digress. Anyhow, Solstice is a true escape from the typical restaurant experience in Columbia. Reasonable portions of high quality, well executed meals with zero pompous attitude.

I had an impressive cornmeal encrusted halibut that didn't need to be coated with a laundry list of fatty ingredients because it was already GOOD. Light yet decadent, this meal made me happy to have made the journey. The dessert was also excellent, a berry strudel, warm when it hit the table and filled to the brim with sweet berries and cream.

The fiancé enjoyed the special three course - appetizer, entré, dessert - menu, which is available early in the week for $25. This night had a German theme, a reflex selection for him. Later in the week, the special menu gets a little more expensive as it expands to four courses.

The service was knowledgeable especially with regard to wine, and they certainly worked to please.

This is must visit for any area foodie. You won't regret the trip.
